If you are visiting the UK for a short stay (up to 6 months) no visa is required, if you want to stay more than 6 months you need to apply for a long term visa.

You don't say if you are a british passport holder and just don't have a current one. If you are British Citizen there is no restriction on how long you stay even if you entered on your Australian passport.

My understanding is if you enter UK on an Oz passport it is recorded on arrival that you are Australian, so don't have the same rights as entering the UK on a British passport.

We are British passport holders which are due to expire. I was considering a career break and returning to the UK for 6 months or less. Do not intend to work while there. Want to test the water so to speak before making a decision to return for good or not. We do intend to renew British passports at some point.

If you are a british citizen travelling with an expired british passports you are afforded the rights of a british citizen. Passport validity does not mean you lose citizenship and the rights that go with that.

Don't panic. You are british citizens and just because your passport has run out doesn't give you any less rights. It will be recorded that you entered on an Australian passport but as a british citizen you don't have to leave.

If you choose to enter the UK on another passport, then you may well be subject to the rules of that passport. It is preferred by UK customs if you are a British citizen to enter on your British passport. Cindy42, show your expired British passport to prove your a citizen, then you can enter as a British citizen and there is no need for them to endorse your Aust. passport with 'visitor'.

I think we will try and find the money to renew all our british passports. Seems the best option. Thanks x

They may well endorse your Australian passport with visitor because that is what they have to do and yes the authorities prefer you to enter with your British passport. Other than immigration nobody gives two hoots which passport you came in on. Nobody asks. Applying for a job, seeing a doctor, claiming benefits etc nobody cares. They just want proof of your british citizenship which expired passport and birth certificate will do.
