Hi coming to WA in early Sept and husband is looking for bricklaying or general building/maintenance work. Have seen adverts asking for ABN and Blue card. Could anyone tell us what these are and if they can be arranged before we get there? Thanks

Blue card is now called White card and just a basic induction to site safety. Can be done online and costs about $120.

White Card is used for construction and is a Health and Safety course that can be done online. We used Blue Dog Training and did it in UK before we left. Cost about $120, we have used them since being here for a replacement card etc - gud luck ABN like said before is for people working Self Employed or Sub Contracting

hi, i did my blue/white card 5 weeks ago with bluedogtraining for $90. you have to apply for tax file no. (TFN) first, before you receive ABN number , it can take up to 4 weeks.

Thanks everyone, will look into doing the blue/white card now. Are you able to work prior to recieving the ABN if it takes 4 weeks? I presume that is something that cant be arranged before we leave the UK?

hi, you can work if you have a receipt to show you have applied for TFN but only as employed and i believe you will be taxed at a higher rate until TFN comes through. unfortunately you cannot work as self employed without ABN number.

You are not taxed at a higher rate if waiting for your TFN to be processed. You are given time to notify your employer of your TFN after you commence employment.

Thats a bit of a pain isn't it. A lot of jobs we have seen are self employed and you cant start those until you have the ABN and you cant get that until you get a TFN.
