|My son has made me so proud this year and has just started his 2nd year apprenticeship as a Bricklayer. His employer who obviously receives money from the government etc for taking on and teaching these school leavers is nothing but a dishonest bully !! My son bless him keeps his head down and just gets on with things. I am not sticking up for him just cos he is my son as when he was on work experience with a guy from Dale Alcock he said he was the best young lad he had had and was sorry to loose him. With an apprenticeship you are bound to a contract and in my sons case this was for 3 years. Over the past year I have found out things that my sons employer should have been doing and hasnt been, I have in the past sent messages to him but instead of contacting me back he just has a go with my 16 year old son the following day (very big of him !!!). I found out earlier this year he wasnt receiving any public holiday pay and after speaking with wageline I got this sorted and he now pays it. I now found out after many days of not having worked because there just wasnt any work that my son should have also been paid for this (not a bloody dollar !!) I am so angry that the apprentice board sign these young people up and then dont do any follow up to check they are been treated the correct way !!! They say that they are just there to ensure the training is sorted and nothing else, that stinks !!! I have spoken to ICC who deal with the government payments and they say that to be honest alot of these companies take on apprentices and do exactly the same - THEN WHY ARE THEY STILL ALLOWED TO DO IT ?? - the advise i was given was to try find someone honest to take him on as a 2nd year apprentice and get the contract transfered to someone else. Not that easy as you dont really know someone is genuine or honest until you are already in the contract and working for them. I would do anything for my kids and hate that someone is been allowed to take advantage of him and bully him at work. Just wanted to warn ppl of the down sides to apprenticeship, not all there made out to be if you get landed with a crook !!! :o(|

This is awful. Not sure if there is an ombudsman service (or similiar) to advise.
Hope things work out for your son.

|Hi Cindy - thanks for your reply and i will have a look at the link you have sent me. There is Fair Work and Wageline that can investigate issues regarding pay etc but unfortunately because my son didnt make a diary then they say there is little chance of getting reimbursed. We now have a diary and are writing in where, what and for how long each day, at least that way we have our own records. Just wanted to warn others about our very young and also very vulnerable youngsters that are been taken advantage of. Just for the record today my sons boss made a very grown up comment about me been in touch with him again saying 'does your Mum do everything for you, even tuck you in bed at time' - cheeky t**t and my answer to that is too right I do and I am in no frame of mind to let you get away with this crap anymore haha. Why and how unfair it is to tie a 16 year old to 3 year contract and then brush him off when he is in trouble. Apprentice Centre, you have a lot to answer to and I have lost all faith in YOU !!!|

|I would advise him to join a good union if possible, and let them sort all the dirty work with the employer. |

|Typical of over here,i'mso sorry for your lad.
Any regulatory body has either no teeth or can't be arsed.
At least the EU had workers rights..hmmm

|Thankyou - unfortunately it does seem like it happens quite regular. About time something was done to protect our future tradies, afterall when they are kicked in the teeth like my son has been then they loose all interest and no longer enjoy the job. When i know he gets up religiously every morning, sometimes as early as 4.45am it makes me sad to know he is been used in such a poor way :o(|

|Sorry to say but it's par for the course here.
Kids have advantage taken of them all the time and parents effectively condone it by expecting 14 year olds to go to work for a meagre $6 per hour doing the same job, with same responsibilities as adults (minimum wage approx $18/hr). The kids are no longer employable by the smae companies when they reach 18 as they cost too much....
This is in my opinion equivalent to child abuse - yes kids need to get experience in the workforce and it does them good to see how far money doesn't go, but why should they have to accept a lesser wage than an adult doing exactly the same job?|
