I have lived in Australia for 4 1/2 years. I know how bad homesickness can be. Here are some of my tips for finding your feet. When you first move into a rental, get the junk mail delivered even if the rental has put up a notice saying no junk mail, watch out for the delivery person and ask them to deliver it to you whilst you are living there. It will help you find the deals as well as giving you vouchers for meals out. Ringing home... get yourself a prepaid calling card from a newsagents or chinese gift shops.. best ones we have found at Australia Telecom and Tel Pacific. A $10 card gets your around 7 hours talking time to the UK (you still have to pay Telstra local call rates unless you have a plan that includes them). And finally, become an Avon rep. It is the quickest and easiest way to make friends with the people in your area, you are making an income and with no layout and you can do it round school and even your day job.
