|I understand that UK phones should work OK in Australia. My question is regarding getting it checked for compatibility. I have read that it is illegal to use a UK phone or modem without first having it checked by Austel. Does anyone know how I can contact them to get my phone's compatibility checked?|

90% of the time it works. I brought mine on the plane so that I can use it as soon as I rented. By the way, stick the phone in your pocket when you board the plane. It save your luaggage being more overweight.
When asked why, 'Just say it is electronic equipment, as per advice on the ticket'.
To use just unplug at the phone end, and replug at the phone end at your rental, they are stardard.

I doubt if it would be worth it, as they do extensive tests on phones before manufacturers are given authorisation to import them. I feel that testing just one would not be viable.
It is probably the same situation that the UK authority has. When I moved back to the UK and brought my Australian phone, I was advised it was against the law to connect to the British Phone network, and I would be up for costs if it caused any costs to the phone company. From the stickers on Australian phones I reckon the same applies.
I brought 2 UK phones back to Australia, one worked and one didn't :)
