You may be interested to learn that there seems to be quite a market for secondhand baby goods on Bid or Buy (South Africa's eBay). I've sold a pram, Bumbo, preggy roll and antenatal monitor pretty fast.

On selling properties, maybe think laterally and have faith. I recently sold a flat without an agent. I had an agent previously and all he did was whine ... the poor market, the flat is south facing (bad in South Africa), only one parking bay, etc. I sold it to someone who loves it (beautifully renovated and large), I got my price and I don't have to pay agent's commission ... that saving will almost pay for my secondhand airconditioned eggbox of a car in Oz. Put the word out - tell everyone you know who might be interested in your property and you might be shouting 'bingo' soon. I did it, maybe you can do it too. I would, however, recommend that you get a conveyancing attorney to draw up the sale agreement for you.

Think I should now try the same trick with my car. The formal car market in SA seems dismal at present. I won't put my offer out to strangers though as there are too many lunatics out there who might take the test drive too far and try to steal your car.

Someone out there wants what you have got, you just have to find them.

The next step in the process is for us to be contacted by an international relocation expert. We wait with baited breathe. I am most intrigued by this process we have set in motion.

I think I am paralysed by the shock of all the sorting out we have to do. So far I have only packed my most precious beading box! One accumulates so much junk over the years when in reality you need very little in your day-to-day life. A lot of stuff has already been channeled in the direction of our domestic worker. I had an accumulation of years and years of clothes from a wee size 8 right up to maternity sizes not too mention tons of too small baby girl clothes. I think I have already clothed half the township. Our domestic has a large family and my massive extended wardrobe is gradually being absorbed by them. I dread having to tell her the bad (for her) news about our move but hubby has said he will pay her 6 months' salary and we'll help her find another job.

I've sold a bit of stuff on Bid or Buy already (South Africa's eBay equivalent) but I think a garage sale may be quicker.

We had an agent come around to view the house yesterday. She says she has only sold 4 houses this year (that's 4 in 10 months!!!). Doesn't sound too promising but at worst we can rent it out and hubby's folks can oversee it.
