It is starting to happen ... we are experiencing the last of certain things, that is, if everything goes according to plan with the visa. Baby and I will be attending our last mommy and baby workshop today as it is the end of term. (Argh ... I hope I don't cry!) We have been attending since she was 9 weeks old. For the past few months she has really started enjoying the classes - recognising the cartoon characters and songs and enjoying being around other babies. So sweet seeing them interact! The Christmas party is on Saturday so today isn't the very last activity but some moms and babes won't be attending the party.
I feel terrible in some ways tearing baby away from all the good things in South Africa and I have to remind myself why we need to leave this crazy place. Staying here won't be doing her (or us) any favours. You just have to read the local paper for a grim reminder of why we need to escape. Just last week the headline was about an elderly woman a couple of suburbs away being brutally murdered in her kitchen with kitchen knives. Once you have paged through a few more pages of the newspaper, you literally want to run away ... more murders, rapes, burglaries, robberies, smash and grabs, hijackings, municipal incompetence endangering public health, etc. Shocking stuff! And this is just the local paper!
Baby will grow up an Aussie in a much safer environment. She won't have any memories of these early days as she'll be leaving while still so young but she will know she was greatly loved back in Africa.
