We have our unabridges in our grubby little paws!
12 Dec 2008
It is a miracle! I have just called Home Affairs and our unabridged birth certificates have been ready for collection since 3 December! I'll only really believe it once we have them in our hands but it sounds good. We applied sometime in September. My advice to fellow South Africans is that even if you have only just thought about emigrating, go apply for your unabridged birth certificates NOW. It seems to be a bit of a shambles at Home Affairs. They had to open up case numbers to investigate what the problem was, request the applications be speeded up and at one stage we were told our applications were 'stagnant' had to be re-entered into the system. We got our 457 visas without the unabridges but we needed baby's unabridged to get her 457.

Other than that, things are slowly being crossed off the 'to do' list. Still lots of chaos. My 2008 tax return is in. I was quite impressed with the eFiling thing but let's see if I am still impressed once my assessment comes in. Still no accommodation on that side but I'm sure something will crop up. The universe has been training us for the heat over there - we've been having an unusually hot summer here with temperatures hitting the low and mid-30's regularly. Just add on another 6 degrees or so and it will match the temps over there. Oh boy! We'll probably be more comfortable over there than here as over there we'll have aircon in the house which we don't have here. We've recorded temperatures as high as 30 degrees indoors here lately. The tour guide has confirmed we need a bolt on car seat over there so we are going to have to sell baby's brand new super duper deluxe seatbelt fastening baby seat she has just started using.
