Merriwa has a mix of older style housing and new builds, mostly all one storey housing, and was first established in the 80's. There is one school in the area, Merriwa Primary School. There's also a RAAFA retirement estate at the north end of Merriwa and another retirement estate at the south end. There are plenty of parks throughout the area and a couple of child care centres too.
There are shopping areas at both ends in Merriwa. The north end shops have a petrol station, DVD hire, chip shop, Chinese Restaurant, Pizza, ATM, Swim School, Pet City, Total Eden shop, Garden Centre, and a Toddler/Kindy Gymbaroo. There's also a medical centre, with some other shops beside that. The south end area called Merriwa Plaza has a 7 day Chemist, newsagent, Supa IGA supermarket open 7 days, bakers, cafe & lunch bar, Oriental food market, ATM, Hair studio, Fred's Hardware, Chip shop, Nail beauty shop, Liquor land & Chinese Restaurant. Next to that is the pub Merriwa Tavern, bottle mart and a Chooks fast food shop.
There's also a Salvation Army Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and there's the Coastlands Christian Church in the Community Centre.
Some parts of Merriwa look a bit untidy as there are some overgrown gardens, but most of it looks fine. The north end shops can sometimes look bad as they are a constant target for being sprayed with graffiti, but the shop owners are quick to remove it.
It's a much cheaper alternative to buy than Butler which is the suburb up from Merriwa, you can get a 4x2 house in Merriwa for under $400k. You will find the older properties are 3x1 and the newer houses are 4x2.
It is a nice area and with it being older it has some lovely established trees and gardens. There is a regular bus service in Merriwa which takes you to the train station and shops in Clarkson, and it's also a short drive to Quinns Rocks beach and Mindarie Marina.
